Assistant Professor of Oceanography
The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time Assistant Professor in Oceanography. We seek foremost a
sea-going applicant interested in interdisciplinary research focused on high latitude marine ecosystems to
complement our existing faculty. The area of expertise is open within the marine biological, chemical and
geological disciplines, and may include, for example: bioacoustics, biogeochemistry, fisheries oceanography,
marine microbial/molecular ecology, nutrient dynamics, etc.

Alaska's marine regions and ecosystems offer diverse and phenomenal opportunities for research.
This hire will extend SFOS’ already strong interdisciplinary programs focused on the Gulf of Alaska, Bering
Sea and/or Arctic Ocean regions. SFOS will begin operating UNOLS’ newest and most technologically
advanced vessel, the 260’ ice-capable R/V Sikuliaq (http://www.sfos.uaf.edu/arrv/) in 2013. She will be
capable of year-round operations in light (0.6 m) ice-cover, and supported by facilities at the Seward Marine
Center (http://www.sfos.uaf.edu/smc/).

Applicants with strong scientific and academic expertise are expected to enhance existing capacity at
SFOS. Candidates should demonstrate the potential and desire to teach and to build a vigorous, externallyfunded,
field-oriented research program. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and
undergraduate core and/or specialty oceanography courses in addition to actively mentoring and supporting
graduate students as part of our Graduate Program in Marine Science and Limnology. SFOS faculty are also
expected to provide public service to the nation, state, and local communities by serving on advisory
committees and participating in other university and community activities.

UAF is Alaska’s research university and North America’s most arctic-centered university. Campus
facilities provide state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of research (e.g. Alaska Stable Isotope Facility:

Nucleic Acid Analysis: http://www.core.uaf.edu). SFOS has more than 60 faculty and over 150 graduate

hire follows the recent strengthening of our fisheries and marine science programs in Fairbanks through the

Qualified applicants must possess a Ph.D. in oceanography or related field from an accredited
university by the time of hire. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. The applicant must be proficient in
English, have university-level teaching ability, and have a strong research and publication record appropriate
to their experience and date of degree.
