As part of a strategic inter-disciplinary initiative focused on marine coastal sustainability, the
Department of Oceanography’s Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (CMORE)
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track research faculty position at the rank of
assistant, associate, or full researcher. The appointment is anticipated to begin effective August 1,
2012 or as soon thereafter as possible. Candidates are sought with expertise in research and analysis
of impacts of various energy and water strategies on microbial ecology/oceanography and/or
biogeochemistry of coastal environments. Examples of projects include the comprehensive analysis
of the environmental consequences of coastal nutrient loading including the use of enhanced
upwelling of deep seawater for use in Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) and seawaterbased
air conditioning applications; interactions of nutrients and light in controlling marine microbial
activities and diversity and in the function of the major oceanic cycles of carbon, nitrogen,
phosphorus and related bioelements. To facilitate cross-campus collaborations and outreach, the
appointment will be jointly made in the Department of Oceanography/C-MORE at 0.75 FTE and in
the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Sea Grant College Program at 0.25 FTE. Minimum
qualifications: Ph.D. in biological oceanography or closely related field from an accredited college,
university or foreign equivalent received no later than January 1, 2012; demonstrated ability or
potential to teach undergraduate and graduate course in oceanography and global environmental
sciences; demonstrated ability to publish high quality scientific papers, to obtain extramural research
funding, and to communicate scientific issues to the public; willingness to collaborate with
researchers in other disciplines; demonstrated capacity for sustained high-quality research and
