Post Doctoral Research Associate -
Coastal Hydrodynamic and Biogeochemical Modeling
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a U.S Department of Energy government facility. PNNL has the above listed openings for recent coastal, environmental, civil, oceanography and engineering graduates specializing in coastal hydrodynamic and biogeochemical modeling and analysis. The selected candidates will join a well-established marine environment modeling group located in our Seattle office. Research associate(s) will be expected to conduct multi-scale oceanographic, hydrodynamic and/or biogeochemical modeling of water bodies in the Pacific Northwest including Puget Sound and Northwest Straits (Salish Sea), Columbia River, and parts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This effort will involve improving and extending an existing 3-D hydrodynamic model to the coastal ocean and setting up, testing, and integrating various biogeochemical processes into the 3-D model. Responsibilities include processing of data, preparation of model inputs, code development and modifications, and rendering model simulation results into plots and animations for use in scientific presentations, reports, and journal articles. The successful candidate must have prior experience in either or both of the following research areas: (1) conducting oceanographic modeling using one or more of the leading state of the art 3-D ocean modeling codes (eg. FVCOM, EFDC, ROMS, CH3D, SELFE, MIKE, DELFT-3D, SUNTANS and CE-QUAL-ICM); or (2) development of computer models which simulate biogeochemical processes such as sediment transport, primary production, sediment diagenesis and sediment-water exchange which can be used to predict important environmental conditions, including: water and sediment quality (e.g. nutrient and contaminant cycling), ocean acidification, carbon cycling and hypoxia.
The initial appointment is for a two year period with potential for promotion to permanent staff position. Applicants should apply on line (a letter of interest and resume with a list of three references) through the following link
