Position for 3 years phytoplankton research

Research Officer

School of the Environment and Society (Biology)

Post Reference: 4731
Salary scale: £24403 pa

Closing Date: 28 Feb 2008

Description:

Applicants are invited for the position of Marine Biologist (Phytoplankton) in the School of the Environment & Society (Institute of Environmental Sustainability), reference 4731

This position is in support of a 3 year duration NERC funded study on “Partitioning of C, N and P between particulate and dissolved phases during growth of phytoplankton at different pH.” Supervised by KJ Flynn at Swansea University, and DR Clark & JC Blackford at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML). This is a laboratory research project, based primarily at Swansea University but with significant linkage to PML for technical support and modelling. The main activities of the person appointed will be to conduct various culture experiments on marine phytoplankton, grown in sealed systems enabling the transfer of C, N and P between inorganic, organic, dissolved and particulate phases to be determined and subsequently modelled. Technical support is also funded through the grant for nutrient and elemental analyses.

Applicants must have a PhD (or be near completion) in microbiology or in a plankton-related field, with experience of laboratory culture work on microplankton (ideally phytoplankton). The successful candidate will be highly numerate, and have a solid understanding of phytoplankton nutrient physiology. A track record in phytoplankton research would be beneficial, as would conference experience. A knowledge of mathematic modelling as applied to phytoplankton would also be to advantage but is not a requirement.

(It is anticipated that interviews will be held in late April 2008)

Informal enquiries may be made to k.j.flynn@swansea.ac.uk, or phone to +44 (0)1792 295726.
