Assistant or Associate Professor (Senior Researcher / Project Scientist)
(Ocean Observing Initiative, OOI)
Background Information: Oregon State University is embarking on a large scale, multi-year project, the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), in a partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The first five years of this project will be spent in the design, development, testing, and deployment of a research infrastructure, followed by an operational period of twenty five years. Position: The successful candidate for this position will promote and facilitate OOI science research opportunities on ocean observing platforms; design and develop coastal observatories sensor and platform specifications and associated data products used in the OOI. The position will create and present technical scientific reports describing observatory element design solutions. The position requires an ability to work both independently and collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and project managers from across the OOI.
Appointment: Full-time 12-month (1.0 FTE) fixed term appointment. Annual salary is commensurate with qualifications. Duration is one year, but may be extended depending on grant funding and satisfactory job performance. Reappointment is at the discretion of the principal investigators and the Dean.
Responsibilities and Duties
Work with a team of oceanographers to promote and facilitate the scientific opportunities on ocean observing platforms; design and develop coastal observatories specifications for a wide range of oceanographic sensors and platforms, including moorings, autonomous (robotic) underwater gliders, and benthic platforms; Design and develop oceanographic data products, including sampling strategies, data quality standards and test plans; Participate in oceanographic cruises, including cruise planning, scientific leadership, evaluation of equipment at sea, and post-cruise documentation activities.
Qualifications:
Ph.D in Oceanography with demonstrated excellence in scientific research and proposal writing within the oceanographic sciences; experience in sea-going expeditions, with particular emphasis on deploying, recovering, and maintaining moored or over-the-side sensors in physical, chemical or biological applications. Outstanding demonstrated organizational skills; communication skills; ability to work as part of a highly interdisciplinary team; Ability to work effectively at sea for several cruises per year which involves lifting/carrying/moving instrument packages; valid driver’s license; ability to travel. Preference will be given to candidates at the Assistant Professor level, however, applicants with an exceptional record of research achievements and other relevant experience may be considered at the Associate Professor level.
Preferred: Experience in chemical, biological and/or physical oceanography, with a working knowledge of biological, chemical and physical oceanographic sensors (e.g., dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, carbon dioxide, optical attenuation, conductivity-temperature-depth, current meters) and oceanographic instrumentation (e.g., multi-sensor packages, moorings, autonomous vehicles). Experience in developing and/or participating in ocean education programs. Understanding of engineering principles and applications, electrical or mechanical; Data product development including modeling and statistical analysis. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
