ASLO was founded in 1936 to promote the interests of limnology, oceanography, and related sciences, to foster the exchange of information across the range of aquatic sciences, and to further investigations dealing with these subjects.  It is the leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic sciences, fostering a diverse, international scientific community that creates, integrates, and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic science.

NABS is an international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote better understanding of the biotic communities of lake and stream bottoms and their role in aquatic ecosystems, by providing media and disseminating new investigation results, new interpretations, and other benthological information to aquatic biologists and to the scientific community at large.  The society was founded as the Midwest Benthological Society in 1953.
