Two EPOCA positions: Project Manager and Information and Observation Data Manager
EPOCA PROJECT MANAGER
The Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV) is a leading French oceanographic institution. It is a research unit of CNRS and the Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris6 with a permanent staff of 31 scientists and 20 technicians. The laboratory covers the fields of biogeochemistry, physical oceanography, marine optics, remote sensing, treatment of large datasets, zooplankton ecology and physiology, as well as marine microbial ecology. Project
CNRS-LOV will be coordinating the large-scale collaborative project EPOCA (European Project on Ocean Acidification) which aims to document the decrease of ocean pH resulting from the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 and investigate its consequences on marine organisms and ecosystems. This 4 year programme (expected to be launched in May 2008) involves 29 research groups from various European countries. The project preliminary web page is at

Job description
Due to the organizational structure and the scientific complexity of EPOCA, we are seeking applications for a full-time Project Manager (PM; f/m). The PM will regularly report to the Coordinator. His or her scientific and administrative tasks will be to:
- assist the Coordinator by being the overall contact person towards the Commission on scientific matters and reporting, and serve as the link for communication between the partners and the Commission on scientific, administrative and financial matters;
- project management of the scientific work programme, including preparation of periodic progress reports for the European Commission and follow-up of deliverables;
- administrative and financial coordination of the consortium, including gathering reports from partners and monitoring expenditure against budgets, ensuring that the contract and consortium agreement are correctly implemented and examining possible contract amendments;
- organising consortium and committee meetings and taking an active role in these; assist the organizers of the EPOCA training workshops;
- assist with project communication, meeting and workshops, as well as any action for training and dissemination purposes;
- advising the scientific coordinator on strategy, risk management, conflict resolution and other key issues for the success of the project
Qualifications
Ideally, you have a PhD or Masters degree in oceanography, marine biology or a related subject and experience in the management of a research project. You have excellent negotiation and communication skills, and a flexible management style, with the capacity to work effectively in collaboration with the staff of the CNRS administration and with members of the consortium. You also have an excellent command of English and French. The position is funded on the basis of a fixed term contract for 48 months. Gross monthly salary will be up to 2450 euros, depending on qualification and experience.

Job description
We are seeking applications for the position of an Information Manager (f/m) who will fill two half-time activities: Information Technology and Observation Data Management. The tasks of the Information Technology Manager will be to:
- design the EPOCA website and update it regularly
- assist the Project Manager in her/his communication tasks
- maintain on a daily basis the blog on ocean acidification (http://oceanacidification.wordpress.com)
- ensure frequent communication within the consortium through the web site as well as through the already existing Google discussion group that is restricted to the EPOCA consortium
- assist the leaders of WPs 14 and 15 and for dissemination, web-based data management and training activities
The tasks of the Observation Data Manager and Analyst will require oversight over ongoing project activities and a certain degree of authority. They will include:
- maintaining close contacts with PIs and the data center (WDC-MARE)
- maintain contact and coordinate with the Model Data Manager
- requesting data from PIs, reformatting of data, entering data into the central database and integrating data into larger packages
- servicing user requests
Qualifications
Ideally, you have a Masters degree in oceanography, geology, marine biology or a related subject. Experience in computing, data management, web site management and/or communication will be of advantage. You have the capacity to work effectively in collaboration with the partners of the consortium, the coordination office and the data center. You also have an excellent command of English and a reasonable command of French. The position is funded on the basis of a fixed term contract for 48 months. Gross monthly salary will be up to 2225 euros, depending on qualification and experience.
