Post doc position - phytoplankton ecology
Position: Post doc – flow cytometry/phytoplankton ecology
WHERE: The University of California, Irvine
WHAT: We are currently seeking a highly qualified researcher working with Dr. Adam Martiny to study the biogeochemical role of phytoplankton using flow cytometry and cell sorting.
BACKGROUND: The candidate will participate in a large collaborative project between researchers at Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science, Princeton, WHOI, UCSD, and UCI. The goal of this project is to understand how plankton biodiversity regulates the elemental composition of the ocean. To do this, we are combining field observations, genomics, laboratory experiments, and mathematical modeling.
DUTIES: The candidate will lead one or more independent research projects studying physiology, genetic variation, or biogeochemical role of phytoplankton in the field using flow cytometry and cell-sorting within the framework of this larger collaboration. There will also be opportunities for participating in research cruises and visiting collaborating institutions. In addition to this research, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining an InFlux cell-sorter and train and supervise technicians, master students and PhD students using the equipment. There will be ample opportunity for collaborations if desired.
REQUIREMENTS: We are looking for a researcher with experience in flow cytometry or other advanced instruments and a general interest in phytoplankton. Suitable candidates would have a PhD in marine science, microbiology, or a related field. Strong communication skills are essential for this interdisciplinary project; it is expected that the candidate will write articles and give oral presentations about the results of their research.
TO APPLY: Applications must consist of the following:
- Cover Letter. It is an opportunity in < 1 page to introduce yourself and highlight the key reasons you should be considered for the role. Include your contact address, email and telephone number.
- Curriculum Vitae, covering the following areas:
• Educational qualifications and professional affiliations that detail the full title of the qualification, the year awarded and the title of the institution attended;
• Employment history in chronological order, starting with current position and specifying dates of employment, title of each position, name of employer, main duties or accountabilities and achievements;
