Title. GC33: Controls on the vertical fluxes of biogenic materials in the
global ocean: Implications for oceanic uptake of CO2.
Co-Conveners.
Sus Honjo, WHOI: <shonjo@whoi.edu>
Tim Eglinton, WHOI: <teglinton@whoi.edu>
Description: Prior studies have revealed the existence of the biological
pump that exports photosynthetically-derived particulate organic carbon
(POC) and associated biogenic material to the deep ocean. This process
supports ecosystem metabolism from the surface ocean to the seafloor, and
results in the transfer of CO2 to deep waters. The factors that influence
the efficacy of the biological pump remain poorly understood. We invite
contributions that shed light on the underlying biological/biogeochemical
processes, seek to quantify the export fluxes over the continental margins
and in the open ocean, and provide improved constraints on global rates of
CO2 transfer to the ocean interior.
Title. GC32: The biological pump and carbon cycling in the cryopelagic
Arctic Ocean
Co-Conveners:
Tim Eglinton, WHOI: <teglinton@whoi.edu>
Robie Macdonald, IOS: <Robie.Macdonald@dfo-mpo.gc.ca>
Description: Growing attention is being paid to the behavior of the
biological pump and the carbon cycle of the Arctic Ocean in response to
climate change. We invite contributions seeking improved understanding of
surface ocean primary production, and the fluxes and mechanisms associated
with the vertical export of particulate organic carbon and associated
materials in permanently and seasonally ice-covered regions of the Arctic
Ocean. We also encourage contributions that examine where changes in
productivity and carbon export might occur first, whether an invigoration of
the biological pump could influence CO2 sequestration in the deep Arctic
Ocean, and interactions between terrestrial and marine carbon cycles in the
Arctic.
