Second Announcement: 3rd GEOTRACES Data-Model Synergy Workshop

Dear IMBER colleague,

As previously announced, the 3rd GEOTRACES Data-Model Synergy Workshop will take place from 14 to 17 November 2011 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. The workshop will focus on ocean particles, with emphasis on their role in the biogeochemical cycle of trace elements & isotopes (TEIs).

The first three days of the workshop will consist of three sessions: 1) Observing particles in the ocean: Methods, Results, & Lacunae, 2) Role of particles in the cycle of TEIs, and 3) Transport & transformation of particles. Each session will consist of invited keynotes followed by topical talks and then a round-table discussion.

The last day of the workshop will be used to recommend future studies that would further our understanding of ocean particles, both in the context of GEOTRACES and beyond. Although GEOTRACES is focused on TEIs, approximately 2/3 of the material to be covered at the workshop is equally relevant to the cycling of particulate biogenic phases as well, which is especially of interest to the ocean carbon community. The action items to be identified during the workshop will be reported in a journal publication in order to provide higher visibility to the output of the workshop.

Please submit your abstract to: data_model@geotraces.org. Deadline for abstract submission is August 30, 2011 and deadline for registration is September 30. Please note that there will be a limited amount of space at the preferred hotel and that this accommodation will be allocated to speakers and early registrants.

The organizing committee will cover travel, accommodation and food expenses for a maximum of 40 participants. The expenses of keynote speakers will be reimbursed in their entirety. Remaining funds will be allocated in priority to students and young scientists.

For further information please see attached flyer or click here.

Planning Group: Bob Anderson, Christoph Heinze, Gideon Henderson, Catherine Jeandel, Phoebe Lam, Olivier Marchal, Pere Masque (also local organizer) and Ben Twining.
