Faculty Research Assistant
(Ocean Observing Initiative, OOI)
Background Information: Oregon State University is embarking on a large scale, multi-year project, the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), in a partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The first five years of this project will be spent in the design, development, testing, and deployment of a research infrastructure, followed by an operational period of twenty five years. Position: The successful candidate for this position will design, construct, test, and document electrical systems, assemblies, and sub-assemblies used to meet science requirements in the OOI.
The position will create and present technical reports describing observatory element design solutions. The position requires an ability to work both independently and collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and project managers from across the OOI.
Appointment: Full-time 12-month (1.0 FTE) fixed term appointment. Annual salary range is $48,000-$55,000, commensurate with qualifications. Duration is one year, but may be extended depending on grant funding and satisfactory job performance. Reappointment is at the discretion of the principal investigators and the Dean.
Responsibilities and Duties
Work with a team of oceanographers to implement science and research requirements, including design, construct, test, and document electrical systems, assemblies, and sub-assemblies used in the OOI. Design electrical and data system integration, including: Marine platforms, sensors, software drivers, embedded controls, data loggers, data communications and power control (battery and cabled). Ensure operational quality, including, plan, conduct, and document tests to verify that scientific, performance, and integration requirements are met. Coordinate system design with OOI science engineering and quality assurance teams to design interfaces between subsystems. Prepare and present technical reports describing observatory elements, oceanographic cruises and data quality control procedures. Actively participate in field operations, including: Equipment operation, maintenance, and installation cruises.
Qualifications:
MSEE or BSEE with at least two years experience in engineering design. Successful candidates will have demonstrated the technical skill, motivation, independence, and creativity necessary to complete challenging scientific engineering tasks. Engineering experience with oceanographic instrumentation or equipment. Experience with CAD for design, analysis, schematic capture and layout documentation. System test planning and test execution experience. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively at sea which involves lifting/carrying/moving instrument packages.
Preferred: Participation in oceanographic research. Experience with formal design and documentation procedures and processes in large construction projects. experience with communication protocols such as Ethernet, SPI, and I2C, RS232. Oceanographic cruise experience.
