OS19: Towards Autonomous Ocean Carbon Cycle Observations
Conveners:
Todd Martz (trmartz@ucsd.edu),
James Bishop (jkbishop@berkeley.edu)
Prediction of future changes to the ocean carbon cycle is hindered by a
chronic lack of observations of time-varying pools and fluxes of dissolved
and particulate inorganic and organic carbon species in the water column
and at the air/sea interface. Of particular concern is the almost complete
lack of observations of the subsurface biotic flows of carbon. This
session seeks contributions that highlight progress in the development of
low cost/low power autonomous sensors for carbon parameters (and carbon
cycle process relevant parameters) and their integration and deployment on
long lived autonomous platforms such as (but not limited to) profiling
floats, gliders, surface drifters and moorings.
