Ocean Science Town Hall on next steps to establishing a global observing system

Hello All
In conjunction with Ocean Science Meeting Session 085 (“085: Development of a Global Ocean Biogeochemical Observing System Based on Profiling Floats and Gliders” – Monday 0800), there will be a Town Hall meeting on Monday evening (Feb. 20) to discuss “Current Progress towards Development of a Global Ocean Biogeochemical Observing System”. The focus is on development  of a global biogeochemical observing system similar in nature to the Argo system.

Planning for such a system began with the ALPS (Autonomous and Lagrangian Platforms and Systems) workshop in 2003, has progressed with IOCCP and IOCCG white papers, an OCB Scoping Workshop, several community white papers developed for the Ocean Obs 09 conference, and focused sessions at the OCB summer workshop.   Many of the latest developments will be discussed in oral and poster sessions at the meeting:

The evening Town Hall will review past planning and will focus on regional scale experiments that are now funded or proposed for locations from the Southern Ocean to the subtropical and subpolar Pacific, and the Arctic.   Community input and suggestions on the next steps that would enable an autonomous, in situ global observing  system for ocean biogeochemistry  will be encouraged.

The Town Hall is organized by Mary Jane Perry, Herve Claustre and Ken Johnson.  It is cosponsored by the US-OCB program.

Hope to see you at the oral presentations, poster sessions and the Town Hall.

EVM09: Current Progress towards Development of a Global Ocean Biogeochemical Observing System (Town Hall)
Monday February 20, 18:00 – 21:00, Ballroom A
Organizer: Kenneth Johnson, johnson@mbari.org
A “town hall” meeting to inform interested community members about efforts to develop a global ocean biogeochemical observing system that is similar to Argo and to solicit community input regarding priorities and implementation strategies for such a global system. We would have a short description of prior planning, brief updates regarding funded and planned “regional scale” observing systems experiments, and updates on technical developments. This would be integrated with an effort to solicit community input on next steps, pieces that might be missing, etc.
