Session Title: Carbonate Chemistry Feedbacks Within Reef Habitats: What Local Controls Can Offset/Exacerbate Ocean Acidification Within Reef Communities?
Session Description: Changes in surface ocean chemistry in response to rising atmospheric CO2 are well documented. Numerous laboratory experiments have demonstrated that such changes could prove deleterious to coral reefs in coming decades. While these effects are commonly interpreted as responses to changes in carbonate mineral saturation state (Ω), local carbonate chemistry within reefs is typically very complex and the secular decline of Ω over the past century is not well documented. Local factors such as community metabolism, sediment dissolution, freshwater input, organic carbon cycling, among others can impart additional significant control on ambient carbonate chemistry. This themed workshop invites contributions on field-based process studies of carbonate chemistry within coral reefs to better assess the primary feedbacks and controls of ocean acidification on coral reefs. Special attention will be given to efforts that integrate data from field-based studies with theoretical models to improve predictions of the response of reefs to ocean acidification.
