Rapid advances in ocean carbon research are being driven by targeted ocean biogeochemical process studies (e.g., VERTIGO, SOFeX, EDDIES, SOLAS), on-going time-series programs (HOT, BATS, CARIACO), the global CLIVAR/CO2 Repeat Hydrography Program and surface CO2 Volunteer Observing Ship Program, and satellite observations. A rich set of opportunities for ocean carbon cycle research is also emerging from the planned NSF supported ORION ocean observation infrastructure. The format of the workshop included invited plenary talks, poster sessions, and discussion groups. Participants included ocean scientists with expertise in ocean carbon observations, process studies, remote sensing, numerical modeling and sensor/platform technology development.
The workshop was held Monday, August 1st through Thursday, August 4th on the Quissett Campus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole MA. Full or partial travel support was available for most workshop participants. In particular we encouraged students and post-docs to apply. Please contact Mary Zawoysky for more information.
