Student Opportunities

  • A Ph.D. graduate student position is available in the Coastal Water Health lab at the Harte Research Institute of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to study phytoplankton/harmful algal bloom dynamics in Texas estuaries. The position is available for an August 2026, or January 2027 start date. review of applications will start on March 23 and continue until filled.
  • Apply  for the  Dissertations Symposium in Chemical Oceanography (DISCO) to be held in Lihue, Kaua‘i from 1 to 5 December 2026. Deadline May 1
  • Graduate students at the University of Connecticut beginning in 2026. Our work will span a wide range of topics, including: Reconstructing and modeling the Earth’s past carbon cycle, Advancing our understanding of the modern carbon cycle,Exploring innovative approaches  to carbon capture and critical mineral extraction. These positions will offer the chance to work at the intersection of fundamental Earth system science and solutions for climate and sustainability challenges. Please feel free to reach out for more information or to discuss a potential fit.
  • U.S. GO-SHIP is seeking to fill 6 student positions (with the CTD, LADCP, and Tracer teams) on the 2026 re-occupation of the Pacific Ocean zonal 9.5°N line P04E (Marshall Islands to Panama, ~7.5 weeks, May-July 2026). Application review will begin January 2, 2026.
  • PhD opportunity at University of North Carolina at Charlotte
  • Multiple fully-funded PhD position in the University of Cape Town Marine Biogeochemistry Laboratory focused on marine organic aerosols and ocean-atmosphere nitrogen cycling. The student will work collaboratively within a larger group associated with the Schmidt Sciences OBVI project entitled "Oxygen and biogeochemical dynamics along the west African margin: Processes and consequences (WAM)" and a National Research Foundation project entitled "Physical and biogeochemical drivers of marine organic aerosols in a complex coastal system". The exact project for each PhD student will be decided collaboratively based on experience and interests. Please circulate the advertisement widely. International students are welcome to apply. Please note, a MSc or equivalent is required to register for a PhD. Interested students can email katye.altieri@uct.ac.za with questions or send a CV and one page statement of interest. The application will remain open until filled.
  • Dr. Wei-Jun Cai, from the School of Marine Science and Policy at the University of Delaware, is seeking two doctoral students to join his research group. Research topics include ocean uptake of anthropogenic carbon, ocean acidification (OA), and marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). Interested students are encouraged to contact him at wcai@udel.edu
