Call for SSC nominations
OCB is seeking nominations for new Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) members, including a new early career SSC member. To qualify for the early career slot, a nominee must have completed a PhD within the last 4 years; both postdoctoral researchers and faculty members are eligible. For the early career nominees who are currently postdocs, a letter of support from the nominee’s postdoctoral advisor is required in addition to the other information listed below. The following SSC members are scheduled to rotate off at the end of 2021:
- Marjorie Friedrichs (VIMS) – biogeochemistry of estuarine and coastal systems, biophysical modeling
- Julie Granger (Univ. Connecticut) – nitrogen cycle, stable isotope geochemistry, high latitude biogeochemistry, benthic-pelagic coupling
- Raleigh Hood (UMCES) – biological oceanography and biogeochemical modeling
- Adam Martiny (Univ. California, Irvine) – marine bacteria, elemental stoichiometry, genomics
- Maria Tzortziou (CCNY CUNY & Columbia Univ., Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory) – anthropogenic and natural stressors on biogeochemical exchanges, photochemical processes, and ecosystem functioning
We are especially interested in filling the following expertise gaps:
- satellite remote sensing and biooptics
- coastal/estuarine modeling
- molecular -omics methods/applications
- ocean carbon dioxide removal
- deep ocean and sedimentary processes
- high latitude (Arctic, Antarctic) processes and change
Please consider casting a diverse net in submitting nominations. We are seeking to entrain new voices and ideas in OCB! Nominees should be at US-based institutions (including Univ. Puerto Rico, Univ. Virgin Islands (outside the continental U.S.), historically Black colleges and universities, minority-serving institutions, Hispanic-serving institutions, tribal colleges and universities, etc.). Please submit your nomination(s) to Mary Zawoysky (mzawoysky@whoi.edu) in the OCB Project Office by November 29, 2021 (extended) with the following information about your nominee:
- Name, affiliation, and email address
- Expertise as it pertains to OCB
- Abbreviated CV (2-page limit – NSF biosketch format)
- 1-2 sentences speaking to the nominee’s capacity to contribute to OCB leadership, science planning, and implementation
- Verification that the nominee is willing to serve on the SSC
